Use of articles in English
A, An and the are called articles in English grammar.
articles are divided into two sub-categories;
1. Indefinite Articles
2. Definite Articles
- Indefinite Articles (A, An)
- Definite Article (The)
1. Indefinite Articles:
A, an are used before the countable nouns. Indefinite articles cannot be used before the nouns which are uncountable.
"An" is used before the nouns which have vowel sound and "A" is used before the nouns which have consonant sound.
For example An egg, an Elephant, An Apple etc
"A" A jug, A table, A chair etc.
2. Definite Articles:
We will use the when we discuss about any specific thing or any thing which has been discussed before for example
the book you gave me has been lost.
let us go the club.
there was a lion. the lion was very old.
or any single noun represent any group then "The" will be use before this.
For example, The dog is faithful animal.
"The" is also used before the names of seas, river mountains range, holy books, nations and news papers.
For Example The Indus, The Himalayas, The Muslim, The Pakistan Times
The is also used before the name of some countries and provinces.
For Example The Punjab, The U.S.A, The U.A.E
If there is superlative degree before any noun then also "The" is used.
For example: The best boy, the most beautiful girl, the darkest cloud.
The is also used before the comparative degree in some cases,
for example: The higher you go, the cooler it is.
