Use of articles in English A, An and the are called articles in English grammar.  articles are divided into two sub-categories; 1. Indefinite Articles 2. Definite Articles Indefinite Articles (A, An) Definite Article (The) 1. Indefinite Articles: A, an are used before the countable nouns. Indefinite articles cannot be used before the nouns which are uncountable. "An" is used before the nouns which have vowel sound and "A" is used before the nouns which have consonant sound.
